Mato Grosso

... is the third largest of Brazil's 26 states. As far as I can see it has no particular claim to fame, although it does include the Chapada dos Guimarães and Xingu National Parks, and the Pantanal – the world's largest wetland.

The name is pronounced matu grossu, and means 'thick bushes'. This refers, presumably, to the fact that half of the state is covered by the Amazonian rainforest.

This was my question; I had no recollection of having ever heard previously of the Mato Grosso, but by a pure fluke I managed to guess the correct answer. It might have been helpful if the setter had asked something like "The Mato Grosso is the third largest of the 26 states of which country?" Or if the setter is aware of a claim to fame that has escaped me, this could have been mentioned.

(The way the question was actually phrased makes it sound like a range of mountains, rather than a geopolitical entity.)
